When it comes to security cameras, resolution is one of the most frequently mentioned factors. Yet not everyone truly understands the term. In today's article, let's join KBVISION to learn about resolution in security cameras — and how to choose a camera with the resolution that suits your needs!

What Is Resolution in a Surveillance Camera?

Resolution in a surveillance camera is the measure of the image quality a camera can deliver. Using pixel technology to build the digital frame, MP is calculated as the number of horizontal pixels multiplied by the number of vertical pixels. 1 pixel = 1 picture element. 1 megapixel = 1 million pixels.

Resolution is the factor that directly determines whether an image appears sharp or blurry. The higher the resolution, the better the image we can capture — or re-photograph with better zoom capability — with details remaining sharp when enlarged, providing a better viewing experience.

The most common resolutions for home security cameras on the market today include:

• 2MP (1080p)

• 4MP (1440p)

• 5MP (1920p)

• 8MP (4K / 2160p)

Comparison table of image resolution on security cameras:

These are the best resolutions for security cameras, because surveillance cameras of this kind can deliver stable, outstanding image quality day and night at a fairly reasonable budget.

Take a look at the illustration of camera image resolution below:

So what's the difference between security cameras with 2MP (1080p), 4MP (1440p), and 5MP (1920p) resolution?

In general, a 1440p security camera can record super HD video, twice as good as 1080p because it captures images with more pixels.

Simply put, the higher a security camera's resolution, the better the image quality it delivers — especially when capturing or recording distant subjects.

To help you understand the resolution offered by IP cameras and analog cameras, we have created an image with examples of security camera resolution below.

Resolution on IP Cameras and Analog Cameras

Compared with IP security camera resolution, analog camera resolution is measured differently — by the number of horizontal and vertical lines (TVL: TV Line) displayed in an image.

Compared with the resolution of IP security cameras, analog camera resolution is lower. So it's best to buy IP cameras with sharper image quality for your home and business.

To help you understand the resolution offered by IP cameras and analog cameras, let's look at the security camera resolution example below:

How should you choose the resolution of a surveillance camera?

Using a high-resolution security camera will solve many problems for you, such as:

• Easily identifying an intruder's face.

• Reading the license plates of vehicles entering and leaving.

• Seeing details of items and goods in supermarkets and stores.

• Distinguishing and identifying banknote denominations at transaction counters.

• …

However, a high-resolution camera requires more bandwidth to transmit high-quality images and video. So if your network isn't fast and stable enough, your surveillance camera may deliver images at a lower resolution than the product's specifications. Therefore, depending on your needs, choose a security camera with the resolution that suits you.
