One of the things customers care about most when approaching an SEO agency is timing. Typically, customers prefer a specific answer with a concrete number over a vague reply like "it depends" — even though, in reality, the timeline for an SEO project genuinely does depend on many factors.

How long does it take for SEO to work? Markdao will help you resolve every question about the timing of an SEO project.

How long does it take for an SEO project to "take shape"?

Most customers want to see results shortly after putting money into SEO. However, SEO is not like many other forms of advertising — you cannot see results immediately. Usually, customers only care about effectiveness in terms of organic traffic and conversion rate for generating leads. But in truth, SEO results show up in many other ways as well. Let's walk through the 3 phases of an SEO project and the factors that affect it to understand better.

Phase 1: Project Setup

This is the first phase of an SEO project. When a customer approaches an SEO agency, the agency will assess and analyze everything. So what is "everything" here?

Competitor assessment:

When talking about competitors, you must define them correctly: they should be rivals in the same market, producing similar products and services, and also doing SEO. When analyzing competitors, what you need to look at is the "age" of the website, the Domain Rank (DR), keyword difficulty, and keyword length. Competitor analysis will help you:

  • Compare your own website against competitors' websites

  • Know where your website stands relative to same-industry rivals in terms of SEO

  • Devise an SEO strategy with better-optimized keyword plans

Market analysis:

Without experience in market analysis, you will find it quite difficult to understand your own customers and can easily misjudge the market — leading to poorly planned SEO strategies.

However, competitor assessment and market analysis must be carried out at the same time. You can't focus only on competitors while ignoring market developments, and you can't just analyze the market without knowing where you stand against competitors or what SEO strategies they are running.

‍

Phase 2: Project Execution

For On-page SEO: 3 months for the project to "take shape"

Usually, if you only intend to optimize keywords related to your brand or business, or your market isn't very competitive, On-page SEO alone is enough. When we talk about On-page SEO, we immediately think of content — the most important element and one of the 3 factors rated most highly by Google. However, beyond optimizing content, quite a few other steps are needed to make the On-page SEO plan more effective:

  • Optimize the technical elements on the website

  • Create tier-1 satellite websites

  • Submit the website

  • Build a backlink system

  • Create tier-2 satellite websites

  • Create and optimize content on the satellite websites

For Off-page SEO: optimal timeframe is around 9–12 months

If you need qualified leads or customers buying products directly on the website, you'll also need the Off-page part. Off-page has no time limit, because it depends on keyword difficulty and volume. On average, for a new website, we can rank 8 to 15 keywords of difficulty level 2 or 3 per month. Alongside content, backlinks are the other important factor that helps your SEO project produce results faster and gets your website into Google's top 10 more quickly. At this stage, the SEO project needs more time to show results. You need to build a solid backlink system with reputable satellite websites and forums. And once you've built a strong off-page foundation, the gap between your website and the competitors behind you will widen.

On-page SEO and Off-page SEO — the twin pillars of search engine optimization:

That said, in an SEO project nothing operates in isolation. This means that besides strengthening the website, you also need to analyze competitors and keywords, plan content, and build a backlink system. These tasks are done in parallel and support one another. Typically, on-page SEO takes about 3 months, but starting in month 3 you should already be building your backlink system to prepare for keyword rankings. From month 4 onward, you'll see clear gains in rankings, traffic, and lead opportunities. Of course, the results won't be as dramatic as those of an SEO project run for 12 months, but they are significant enough for you to know the SEO project is working.

Phase 3: Project Maintenance

Once the project is complete, you still have to monitor your website to make sure your rankings stay stable. You certainly don't want to pay for an SEO project only to have your website knocked out of the top 10 by competitors after a while, right? Therefore, if you invest properly and plan for long-term SEO, this is definitely an optimal strategy that promises the best return on investment (ROI) available today.

Can you do SEO for a short time and still rank for many keywords?

When customers approach an SEO agency, they always want a short timeline yet many keywords in Google's top positions. Understanding this mindset, Markdao will answer the question many people keep asking: "Can you do SEO for a short time and still rank for many keywords?"

Can keywords hit the top "immediately" after signing the contract?

Many customers who come to SEO services expect their website to be in Google's top search results right after the contract is signed. This is completely impossible! As explained above regarding the 3-phase process an SEO project needs to "take shape," if you want keywords to rank quickly and your website to hold one of the top 10 search positions, customers should be patient — sustainable SEO takes time.

On top of that, some people confuse SEO with running Google Adwords. Simply put, running Google Adwords ads means you pay Google per click on your ad (Pay Per Click — PPC) so your website shows up in search results without doing keyword SEO. With this method, it doesn't take much time to set up a landing page, create content, run A/B testing, and so on — and your website is already at the top of the search results. On the flip side, SEO requires time as well as the knowledge to write website content, build backlinks, optimize everything, and simultaneously keep those keywords steadily "on top."

Can keywords reach the top quickly, within 2–3 months?

Besides the wish for "keywords on top right after signing the contract," some customers ask: "Can keywords reach the top in 2–3 months?" Ranking keywords in 2 to 3 months is entirely possible. We'll explain it in two cases:

Long-tail keywords:

Long-tail keywords typically have high conversion rates. The length of these keywords is directly proportional to how easily they rank "on top." That is, when a keyword is long, less common, and has low competition, optimizing just a few basic factors is enough to push it into Google's top 10. This characteristic can bring you advantages, but it is also a drawback if you don't know how to use it. If the keyword is long enough that a few basic techniques can push it into one of the 10 positions on Google's first page, your competitors can certainly do the same. As a result, even though you reach the top quickly, the ranking doesn't last long, and customers can no longer find your website as easily as before, leading to declining revenue.

However, if you optimize SEO properly and maintain the keyword after the Off-page SEO phase, the long-tail keywords that have reached the top will be fairly sustainable. These long-tail keywords deliver high conversion rates, can boost your conversion rate (CR), and persuade more people to become your customers.

Black hat SEO:

Since SEO optimization in reality follows no fixed rules, you can absolutely use black hat SEO with "loophole" tricks such as buying backlinks or hacking backlinks to push your website to the top.

However, Google's algorithm is now quite sophisticated, so this route to the top carries serious negatives and high risks. With black hat SEO, your website shoots to the top quickly and traffic spikes, which makes Google raise an eyebrow at the sudden surge. Once the mistake is discovered, your website will immediately drop out of the top rankings — and once that happens, it's hard to recover the original position. Worse still, Google may put your domain on a "blacklist" and even make it disappear from the search engine entirely.

Because fast-tracking keywords "on top" carries so many hidden risks, we at Markdao do not take the approaches described above. We respect sustainable values and want to create them.

What happens after an SEO project ends?

Looking at the SEO campaign timeline we laid out, you can probably already picture the answer to "how long does it take for an SEO project to take shape?" Typically, depending on factors such as domain, competitors, website, and keywords, the customer will run an on-page SEO strategy or a full-scale one. Therefore, the timeframe ranges from 3 months to 1 year for a complete project. However, SEO is a long-term strategy, so we don't stop optimizing once that period ends. Think about it: in today's ever-changing market where nothing stands still, if your competitors do SEO better while you fail to maintain your efforts afterward, they will overtake you.

The better and more sustainable your SEO project is, the more traffic your website gets, the higher your conversion rate climbs, and the lower your website's bounce rate falls. This is clearly visible through Google Analytics. So to keep your SEO results stable in Google's top 10, they should be maintained consistently. And finally, if you carry out everything this article covers fully and systematically, you will reach a stream of potential customers. Gradually, your business will build a base of loyal customers, and your revenue will improve noticeably.

That's our answer to the questions most customers ask about the timing and the main phases of an SEO project. We hope this article has given you all the information you need about this type of digital marketing.
