Should You Use Security Cameras with Memory Card Support?

When installing a surveillance camera, storing the footage is practically a mandatory requirement. With today's modern camera systems, there are many ways to store footage (on the recorder's hard drive, directly on a memory card inserted in the camera, to a NAS, via FTP, locally on a computer…).

Among these methods, two storage approaches are the most common, depending on whether you need long-term retention or economy: storing on a recorder and storing directly on a memory card.

Why Use a Camera with Memory Card Support?

When you use a camera that supports a Micro SD card, you don't need an external recorder or hard drive. Simply insert the memory card into the camera's slot and you can start capturing footage immediately — very simple and convenient.

Installing a surveillance camera normally requires running cabling, buying a recorder, and adding storage equipment… which is why camera installation is often expensive and costly. Using a camera with memory card support can save you money while still letting you review data remotely through the software with ease.

In addition, even if you use a recorder as usual, installing a memory card in parallel also helps prevent data loss in the event of a power outage or some failure of the recorder (the recorder cannot record continuously).

However, using a memory card in the camera for recording is not suitable for long retention periods, because memory card capacity is limited — most support up to 256GB.

Also, a camera's storage duration can vary, because sharper images carry heavier data and take up more memory, so the number of days that can be stored will be fewer.

Which Memory Card Should You Use for a Camera?

Besides choosing a quality camera, the memory card is one of the most important components for storing footage to review when needed. That's why you need to choose a quality, suitable card.

There are many different memory cards on the market today for users to choose from. However, to avoid problems such as cards that can't record or that fail quickly, we need to choose a quality card from a reputable brand.
