CXMT completes validation of 6th-gen 4F² DRAM: China's memory maker steps ahead of Samsung and SK hynix

CXMT — China's largest DRAM manufacturer — has confirmed it completed engineering sample validation for its sixth-generation DRAM platform built on the 4F² cell architecture, while the entire market still ships 6F² today. If the roadmap holds, CXMT could be the first company to commercialize 4F² — ahead of both Samsung and SK hynix.

What happened?

At its third-quarter earnings briefing on October 30, 2026, CXMT (ChangXin Memory Technologies) publicly confirmed for the first time that its sixth-generation DRAM platform rests on the 4F² architecture and has completed engineering sample validation — meaning the platform's core performance targets were met on real wafers.

Completed engineering validation is a key step toward commercialization: from here, the product can move into customer qualification on the way to mass production. CXMT said its first 4F² product will be DDR5 RDIMM server memory, with samples expected to reach customers by the end of 2026. Mass production will proceed gradually, depending on customer validation progress and market demand.

How is 4F² different from 6F²?

In DRAM notation, F is the smallest line width a fab can print. Today's 6F² memory cell occupies 3F × 2F, while a 4F² cell is just 2F × 2F — roughly one-third smaller. A smaller cell means more memory cells per unit of chip area, i.e. higher density — a critical factor while DRAM prices are being driven by AI server demand.

To get there, CXMT uses a vertical surrounding-gate (VSG) transistor together with hybrid bonding technology it has developed in-house since 2019. The company says it has published more than 300 patent families covering 4F², a direction it has pursued since its founding.

Where are the big three?

  • Samsung showed a 16Gb 4F² prototype at ISSCC 2026, but mass production at sub-10nm nodes is reportedly not planned until around 2028.
  • SK hynix is still in the research phase: it validated read and write operations on a test array in July and plans to present further 4F² research at IEDM in December.
  • Micron is going the opposite way: after more than two decades of research, it has abandoned 4F² commercialization. Micron's technology leadership argues that real DRAM density is set by the spacing capacitors require, so 4F² buys little density at much higher cost; the company will keep scaling 6F² and then move directly to 3D DRAM.

Analyst firm TrendForce is also cautious: it sees no full-scale 4F² commercialization before 2028 and no effect on spot prices in the short term.

Why is CXMT pushing so hard?

The bigger backdrop is US export controls on chips and semiconductor equipment targeting China. Cut off from Western supply chains, Chinese makers have been forced to localize the entire chain — and that pressure creates a survival deadline for technology leaps like 4F². CXMT listed on Shanghai's STAR Market in July 2026, giving it fresh financial resources to fund this race.

Still, it is worth being clear-eyed: engineering sample validation is not the same as successful mass production. Ahead of CXMT lie customer qualification, the yield problem and production costs — and the company itself acknowledges this product "cannot be entirely converted into immediate short-term profits." The gap between an earnings-call announcement and chips actually shipping can stretch for years.

What it means for businesses and users

In the long run, another DRAM maker mastering a next-generation technology would make global memory supply less dependent on Samsung, SK hynix and Micron — good news for the price and availability stability of servers and PCs.

In the short run, do not expect cheaper RAM because of this news: TrendForce sees no spot-price effect yet, and the first 4F² products target servers, not mainstream memory. When buying servers or upgrading business RAM, proven stability and clear warranty terms should still come before next-generation specifications that are not yet on the market.
