What Are Customer Needs? How to Spark or Create Needs for Customers

We all understand that identifying customer needs and satisfying them is what every business strives for. Quite simply, most customers don't care about your product or your company — what they care about is a solution to the problem they are facing.

Have you ever wondered why you chose one brand's product over another's? Or why you felt comfortable paying for a product on one website but hesitated on another?

Essentially, it's because that brand learned how to spark customer need for its product and persuaded you to trust it enough.

What Are Customer Needs?

Customer needs are defined as "the problems a customer intends to solve by purchasing goods or services." They are the driving force behind a customer buying a product or service. Businesses typically try to identify customer needs — or create needs for customers — to capture their attention for the brand.

What Are Customer Needs?

Some common examples of customer needs:

  • Price needs: Customers always want the money they spend to be worth what they get in return, and the product's price must be in line with the market.

  • Usability and convenience needs: The product needs to be a convenient, easy solution for customers to handle their problem. How to use the product should be clear and simple so it doesn't create unnecessary obstacles.

  • Empathy and friendliness needs: When customers shop for goods and services, they want salespeople who understand the problem they're facing and sympathize with them.

Businesses always know that meeting customer needs — and even exceeding expectations — is the way to drive healthy business growth and build good customer relationships. Yet not every business succeeds.

Why Understanding Customer Needs Matters

Why understanding customer needs matters

No matter how good your product or service is, the truth is no one will buy it if they don't want it or believe they don't need it.

The more you know about your customers, the better you can position your brand around their needs and help your business serve them better by:

  • Providing faster solutions: One of the most common things customers want is real-time support. By identifying customer needs, you can deliver support that is faster and more effective.

  • Improving your products & services: Grasping what customers need helps the business understand the motivation behind purchases. Who knows — you might develop a service or product that meets that latent need. These insights can be used to enhance products or services to satisfy customers.

  • Building a competitive advantage over rivals: Understanding customer needs means your business has captured their attention and driven their purchase decisions. It also means your product is more optimized, better, more aligned with needs, and creates a competitive edge over rivals.

Methods for identifying customer needs

Understanding customer needs is a critical mission for marketers and businesses alike if they want long-term success. After all, we all want to attract, convert, and retain customers — but we can't do that unless we truly know them and what they need.

Conduct surveys

Surveys help you learn more about your customer base and target audience. They let you get inside people's heads and discover why they buy from you.

So don't hesitate to set up a customer analysis survey. You can run it through two groups of tools:

  • Online, such as Google Forms, Facebook's survey tools, and so on

  • Offline, such as in-person surveys at points of sale, trade fairs, or interviews

Beyond that, businesses should also consider and choose suitable interview methods:

  • Group interviews: This group of customers represents the target audience the business is aiming at. Through the representative group's answers, you can grasp the needs of the rest of the audience.

  • Behavioral observation: In fields like clothing or food, you can simply watch customers' attitudes and infer their latent needs — what frustrates them and what they want.

  • Distributing questionnaires: With this method, the business hands out questionnaires in bulk or emails the survey to a large number of customers.

Ask questions that reveal people's attitudes toward different aspects of your brand, such as:

  • Product quality: What is your impression of the product quality?

  • Customer service experience: What was your experience with the company's service?

  • Purchasing or shipping: Please rate the quality of our purchasing/shipping service.

  • Warranty: Please rate the quality of our warranty service.

Track your customers through social media

Tracking customers through social media

Nowadays, with the growth and explosion of the internet and smart electronic devices such as laptops and smartphones, customers' shopping and consumption habits have changed. A recent Nielsen survey found that over 80% of customers will look for recommendations and consult previous users through the media before deciding to buy any product.

Thanks to social media, customers can now engage in two-way conversations with brands and make smarter purchasing decisions.

That's why businesses can leverage social media to understand customer needs and discover what their customers are looking for in a product.

Keyword research

Keyword research is the process of finding and analyzing the words or phrases people use to search for information on the internet.

When you have a question about a product you're using, is your first step calling the company and asking? Or do you first open Google and search for the answer? Most consumers choose the latter.

That means customers' hidden needs actually lie in how they search for your product, company, or service online. For this reason, keyword research gives you the deepest insight into customer needs.

However, all of the methods above only work if customers already know what their need is — what they need and want. So what if customers genuinely don't understand what matters most to them right now? The answer: spark their needs.

How to spark customer needs with the SPIN questioning model

How to spark customer needs with the SPIN questioning model

To identify and spark customer needs, one commonly used questioning model is SPIN (Situation, Problem, Implication, and Need-payoff):

  • Situation questions help the business learn more about a potential customer's current state. Gather as much information as possible about the prospect, their role, and their frustrations.

  • Problem questions probe the customer's frustrations and pain points — the issues and doubts they're facing. Understand what has frustrated prospects in the past, and you'll be ready to explain how your product avoids those problems.

  • Implication questions give customers the chance to connect their problems with the products and services you provide.

  • Need-payoff questions help the buyer understand the importance or urgency of the issue they're facing and the benefits of solving it. At this stage the customer is ready to hear how your product can solve their problem.

After learning to identify customer needs, you need to apply those insights to your business. Your brand can only grow if you meet customer needs in every area — from product design and functionality to how you handle complaints and your warranty policies.

Managing customer information for improvement and research

Managing information about customer needs is important, especially when you already have customers using and experiencing your product. This data can help you analyze and devise ways to improve close rates, address needs, and optimize the customer experience.

You can use customer management software to store the data. For example, when you use SimCRM as illustrated below, you can record customer information by purchasing stage. This not only lets you manage customer needs but also helps you capture why customers came to you and why deals failed.
