Today, surveillance cameras use the common video standards HD-TVI, HD-CVI, AHD, and Analog. Through breakthrough development, video standards for surveillance cameras have been advanced to raise image quality and better meet users' needs.

In today's article, join KBVISION in exploring the video standards used in surveillance cameras today, so you can understand them more deeply and tell the difference between each technology!

HD-CVI

HDCVI (High Definition Composite Video Interface) is a technology for transmitting high-quality HD video signals over coaxial cable.

HDCVI offers many high-resolution video formats, from 1MP (720p) to 12MP and even beyond — far higher image quality than standard-definition video formats and other technologies. The signal transmission distance of the HDCVI standard has also been extended dramatically, reaching 700m-1200m.

This technology is built into many KBVISION camera lines.

HD-TVI

HDTVI (High Definition Transport Video Interface) is a protocol for transmitting high-definition video.

The biggest difference of HD-TVI technology is its excellent modulation technology, combined with high-resolution optical image processing.

HD-TVI technology has solved many high-definition signal transmission problems, extending transmission distance to 300m-500m while maintaining stable signal quality and preserving the original resolution.

AHD

AHD stands for Analog High Definition. AHD technology is a high-definition analog camera technology. AHD cameras can transmit data over distances of up to 500m at frame quality of up to 1080p (equivalent to a 2.0 MP IP camera) with no special requirements for the transmission cabling system.

Technically, AHD technology applies the new-generation Y/C separation technique. The Y/C separator splits the signal to counteract signal interference on the line, very effectively reducing color noise and supporting better image reconstruction.

However, this is an older technology that is gradually being replaced by cameras with newer technologies such as CVI and TVI.

Analog (CVBS)

This is the earliest video technology, now considered outdated compared with those above.

Analog cameras use TV Line as their image unit instead of the pixels used by the technologies above, so images come out at basic display quality and lack color fidelity.

4-in-1 Cameras

A 4-in-1 camera is an HD Analog camera that supports all four video technologies (CVI, TVI, AHD, Analog) in a single camera. With older cameras and recorders that support only one video technology, there is no compatibility between the various video technology standards. With today's technological progress, however, most major camera brands on the market now make HD Analog cameras that support 4-in-1 for better compatibility with older technologies or other brands.

The 4-in-1 camera offers better compatibility with cameras of other brands and technologies, as well as with legacy systems.

Beyond the video technologies above, there are a few others — notably IP and HD-SDI.

The IP camera line in particular is gradually becoming today's trend, as it offers many advantages over HD Analog cameras in image quality and features, while prices keep falling.

Those are the facts about the video standards used in surveillance cameras today. Clearly, choosing a camera with the right video standard makes usage more effective. In particular, to avoid difficulties when you want to replace or add cameras to your surveillance system, choosing a 4 IN 1 camera is a smarter choice than ever.
